E-Weekly Feb 15th, 2008 Print this article PEDI to expand cleanroomBy Tony Deligio Carlsbad, CACustom molder and contract manufacturer Plastic Engineering & Development Inc. (PEDI; Carlsbad, CA) will expand its 5000-sq-ft Class 100,000 cleanroom by 3000 sq ft this spring, initially using the additional space to house a turnkey line for the production an aseptic cap used in a needle-less injection system. Jack Sparacio, president and CEO of PEDI, told MPW the product, which is comprised of four parts (molded outer cap, ring, foam, foil cover), is indicative of a growing portion of PEDIs business, which requires some level of assembly. Our focus is to find customers where we can help with design, tooling, QC, and certification, Sparacio said. In the future, we will be able to do more and more assembly.
PEDI will accommodate the addition within its existing 50,000-sq-ft footprint, expanding its current clean room into what is now warehouse space. PEDI, which also offers two white room spaces for assembly, runs 28 injection molding machines ranging in size from 18 to 500 tons, with most presses in the 50- to 110-ton range. According to Sparacio, medical makes up roughly 80% of its business with the remaining 20% filled by recreation, irrigation, and electronics products.tdeligio@modplas.com |
