Conference reportÑWPCs crossing Atlantic
Processing of wood/plastics compounds (WPCs) is on the rise worldwide but Europe has tended to lag behind. This trend appears to be reversing with interest high in applications that replace existing filler or reduce needed, often expensive resin by adding natural fibers.....more>> |

Profile extrusion keeps getting faster
Profile extrusions are finding their place in a variety of new markets, but the challenges of output including productivity, efficiency and quality remain the same. There's a lot that goes into creating the perfect profile, with tooling and cooling playing a major role in the all-important output rate. "Traditionally, it's always been the cooling capacity, because the limitation for output is cooling the profile and still controlling the dimensional tolerances required..." ....more>> |

Screws & barrels
"Out of sight, out of mind" could aptly describe some processors' attitudes towards their screws and barrels. Should anomalies arise, a processor is more likely to consider the plastic, the tool, or the machine parameters, adjusting variables to accommodate the unseen culprita worn screw and/or barrel. However, with a greater emphasis on improving the primary processing equipment on hand versus purchasing new, investment in screws and barrels is on the rise, according to suppliers.....more>> |

System cuts, dries WPC pellets for easy processing
The "i-heat process" permits underwater pellitizing along with drying of Wood-Plastics Composites (WPC). Generally underwater pellitizing has proved unsuccessful for granulating WPC because of its moisture absorption properties. This manufacturer says its results are achieved by utilizing the inherent heat of the produced pellets. In this process, a two-phase flow directly after the pellets are cut allows the pellets' surface to cool in a fully water-filled cutting chamber to prevent sticking.....more>> |
Getting perfect cuts takes special saws
Profile and pipe processors looking for that perfect cut of their extruded lineals and tubes can consider the traveling up-cut saw, CTS8.5-18. This cutting unit has a capacity of 4.5 by 18 in. (11.43 by 45.72 cm) for profiles and a maximum pipe/tube cutting capacity of 8.7 in. (22.1 cm).....more>> |

PE grade said to help conserve water reserves
Durability of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pressure water distribution pipe systems for easy installation in tough ground bed situations is offered in BorSafe HE3490LS-H. The material has long-term performance and helps utilities eliminate leaks. Today, according to the latest United Nations figures, more than two billion people face water scarcity around the world.....more>> |
PTFE coating for medical tubes
A new service coats kink-resistant nitinol tubes and stainless steel tubes for medical devices with the fluoropolymer PTFE. The highly lubricious coatings maintain kink resistance and can be processed in sizes from 0.002-inch outer diameter up and lengths to 10 ft. The PTFE coating, which is available in green, grey, blue and black, has a tolerance from .0001 to .0003 inch.....more>> |

High output highlights recent extruder entry
Making its debut at last autumn's K show in DŸsseldorf, the DS12.28 parallel twin screw extruder offers processors improved output and more economies. The unit has a 116 mm screw diameter and a 28:1 L/D. It is said to offer a maximum output of about 600 kg/hr for vinyl window profile extrusion and about 1000 kg/hr for rigid PVC pipe.....more>> |
Conair completes move to new HQ
New digs are in store for the employees of auxiliary machinery manufacturer Conair, which in late December completed the relocation of its world headquarters from Emsworth, PA, to another Pittsburgh suburb, Cranberry. The move involves administrative, sales and engineering personnel. The new building also accommodates the Conair Technical Center, a technology showcase and process-development facility.....more>> |
